Like with anybody there are two Guus Hiddinks. For football and for Korea it’s a pity that those two are present in only one person. There is one private Guus Hiddink and one trainer-coach Guus Hiddink. I don’t think hardly anyone knows the first one. All his live het kept his private live out of football. It was already like that in Holland when he was a player and beginning coach in football. Nobody knew the names of his sons and no one should recognize his wife on the street, mainly because she was never in the public eye. Those people and his current girlfriend know the man Guus Hiddink and his drive better than anyone else.

Although I think that the coach Guus Hiddink has a lot of the man in private. He shows when you’re with him outside matches. He is a very warm personality, who like the company of people to talk freely, having a drink en make it cozy. By that he is one of the few coaches I know always open his trainingcamp for journalists. You’re always welcome because he thinks good of the people who wants to visit him. Feel free to come to the hotel, was his answer when I ask him two hours after the match if I could speak him.

He does it also with elderly players when he was coaching PSV Eindhoven. Danish international Soren Lerby en Dutch international Wim Kieft were always late with him in the lobby of the hotel drinking a coffee and smoking a sigaret and talking about life. Why should I send them to bed if they can’t sleep and are not sleeping this time at home. They must feel comfortable otherwise you can’t have succes. Also in Deajeon I saw people of the staff and players with their wifes and kids. He can read the wishes of players outside the field better than anyone else in coaching. The other side is that he asks total comittment of his players and staf when working and even then he gave players space for their own personality. Who try to use this in a wrong way can pack his bags. For those people he can be a nightmare.

In his private life he is known for an adventurer. Climb on a motorbike and start riding and riding and finally stop somewhere to meet knew people. Het loves to enjoy live and people. He is sometimes called a hedonist but that is not true as long as it got a negative sound: he is a hedonist in a positive way. He is not a materialistic guy at all. Het likes to smokes shag and to make his own cigarettes, like workmen do, in stead of buying expensive cigarettes that you only have to light on. He is also not the man of the expensive suits or cars although he loves his driver Kim in Korea. In first he wants to drive himself but because he didn’t know the way he got Kim and if Kim was dutch he brought him with hem when he leaves Corea.

To take his rest and get a free head, he plays golf. It became almost an obsession of him. During his period with the Dutch nationalteam some jaleous people even said that he was more worrying by his handicap than the national team. He shuts them all by reaching the semifinals in France, without one incident. Very special for Holland, where always is something wrong if you’re with a team more than five days gone from home.

He is a great psychological thinker about groupsprocessing. Therefor he is so succesfull. He knows that players on the top level can play good football, the only thing is how the play together and how can he let one work for each other en keep it like that if the succes is not directly coming. Driver Kim is a beautiful example. He is the one with the less influence in the team and the one Guus Hiddink need less to anyway have results with the team. Although when Hiddink leaves he will cry loudest from them all. Guus Hiddink comes from a little place where there is no difference between someone with money and someone without. It’s one community where everybody helps each other and the strong helps the weak and thats something Guus Hiddink was able to adjust in his coaching style and means fairness and thats something every human being like: fairness. It was also teached him when he graduated as a schoolteacher for gymnastics. There he learned pedagogic methods to use it in a group.

And don’t forget that he sees and hears everything and is a good judge of people. But at the same time he knows that it’s good not to hear everything and not want to know everything, so he can use it later when necessary. With the big teams like Real Madrid you must deal with strong personalities of at least people who are big stars for their environment or for a whole country but Hiddink knows if he’s gonna handle them like that he is lost, so he always will present himself as equal and above them because he is the trainer.

He knows when somebody feels himself more important than the team. Than het starts fighting like some of the Koreans have noticed. And than comes his background on the surface and won’t accept anyone to stand above the team. He can give preferences but only as you do everything for the team. If Hwong wants to sit in the coffeeshop after the match against Italy with his kid than Hiddink don’t mind. As long as Hwong don’t abuse his freedom, but thats something will never happen in Korea, Guus said a lot of times. The players are far different from for example south-american players. As long as the overtalented and makes the difference on the field he can accept. When thats no longer the case he will cut them down inmmediately to protect the group, the result, because the minors will start a revolution otherwise and you lose everything.

One of Hiddinks strong points is that he can work very good with the great stars without neglecting the little ones. With Johan Cruyff he was the only one who could work without a row with Romario, who’se known as an enfant terrible. When Hiddink left for Valencia and PSV came with Romario for a friendly Romario starts to cry when seeing him. After the match against Italy he compares Ahn with Romario, not for skills yet, but as he player who can decide a game in a split second and is not the easiest one to work with. Hiddink is not afraid of a fight with a player but will always respect him. Players know that and will give him a lot in return. Whenever you steal is heart he always will remember you. With the dutch national team he also ask the association to organise a special coachcourses for players with great value for the national game so the game can benefit from them. They did and in one year time the famous Ronald Koeman, Frank Rijkaard, Johan Neeskens en Ruud Gullit get their license to train and he let the first three join him with the national team during the World Cup 1998. He is not afraid of strong personalities around him and that they keep the sun away from him. He knows if the sun shine on them, it will also shine on me and when the team is getting results we all have to look out for the sun otherwise we burn because their is enough sunshine for us all.

Because Guus Hiddink saw and live the game from any angle (player, coach, journalist, analyst) and he is very clever and prepared to adjust to new techniques. After accepting the national job of Korea he put a lot of effort and cleverness in surrounding himself with a good team of people around him. He knew it must be done different than before with the Korean coaches, so he took otherones, but he also knew that if you only use foreigners, you get two camps, them against us or the other way round. Therefore and for the culture in the group he also use a lot of Koreans and get the Koreans before the matches during the warming up all the credits by working with the players on the field so also the people can indentify themselves with the team even if it’s led by a foreigner.

After the team arround him he starts about tactics and what kind of players he needed and how he thought Korea could make the difference in matches against topcountries. Because of his cleverness he found a few weakspots with the other teams like their physical tireness after a long season, coming without nearly any preparationtime in very heavy humidly conditions to the World Cup. He knew with 10% beter physics you can make the 10% difference in quality not to be shown. And about the experience of his own players, he let them play against the best in the world and it worked out, they didn’t lost confidence, no the won confidence although they had few heavy losses. Nothing was kept hidden, so he knew that the grow could go much faster. For tactics he choose the dutch style, attack, people don’t like being hunted by a musquito, the want to kill it, but misses a lot of times, even if you’re very experienced because such kind of style of play, none nowhere in the world is used to it and can cope with it, not even very technical and experience sides as France, Portugal and Italy. The sending-offs were not out of the blue of bad refereeing, the came mainly because of frustration, like the Koreans killed Zidane even before the tournament by hunting and chasing him while he thought about an easy afternoon, a friendly against Korea. But he got irritated, wanted to show something and forced himself after only being 48 hours in the country, got injured and it became the beginning of the end of the worldchampion France. So in a way Hiddink and Korea have also thrown France out of the World Cup, indirectly.

When Hiddink sign for Korea we thougt: what the hell he is gonna do there. Far away, no prospect, he must need the money badly. We only remembered the 5-0 beating in Marseille 1998. When a collegue of my visits him in Korea he said that the way was very long but with Chung on his hand he got more faith in succes everyday. Because Chung made anything possible that Hiddink wants. Regularly he was in our columns saying about progress and the way he wanted to follow the trail to the World Cup but the critics, like in Korea, confront him only with the result. But he looked through the result, something that was difficult in Holland.

But during this World Cup the interest in him and Korea is growing enormously. Not like here in Korea but everybody in Holland is supporting the red musquitos and Hiddink got far more respect as during his period with the dutch national team. They always said at that time that he had terrific players and that the final four in France was normal and that it was only a succes if they became champions. But now, with all unknown Koreans going to the last eight is a hugh result, not even comparable with anything he did in Holland before. But that is also the underestimating of the dutch, whats is their blood, of Korean footballers. Even in march in Germany we didn’t saw so much progress, besides the Korean fans becoming mad and looking great, so therefore the World Cup would be good, but not for the team. The team and Hiddink suprised us all a lot and now we hope he can go all the way. And their is a lot of footballtalent, even more than the Koreans expected besides their quickness and fightingspirit. Someone like Park is a combination of it all and he can play in any league in Europe where he wants and will be one of the best.

In Holland he is beloved because he never put himself in the spotlight and here he does the same. Only he communicated very directly what he wants and how he see it and that it has to be done in his way, but thats something you only can appreciate.

What the soccerteam of Korea has to do without him is difficult. I’m almost sure he will choose for a return to PSV Eindhoven after the World Cup. He wants to work with players everyday, PSV need him, he is the right man on the right spot there, the president Harry van Raaij is a friend of him and in Korea what can he achieve more than he already did. In the Asian Cup he can prove himself once again but will he get the same freedom in preparation and everything and what if the referees starting to help Japan again during the tournament like a few did this tournament than he lost to Japan and is that putting the results in de World Cup in a different prospevtive, true or false don’t matter than anymore. To wait for years for the next World Cup last to long. He is already or almost 60 years old than. Perhaps if they ask him a few months before 2006, if he is free because I can imagine that he comes back in two years time to do our dutch national team again. Something he likes to do once again.

And Korea? First of all copy everthing Hiddink has on paper or in his computer and take it as an example for the coming years with here and there a little adjustment. Furthermore the KFA must profit from his work by putting a good structure and find something to reduce the obligationperiod for militaryservice. A lot of talent is in this way killed by the military or in a certain sense by the Nord-Koreans. Furthermore, the players must go to Europe more in stead of Japan because their the topfootballplayers of the world meet each other each week and the Koreans will grow as players when they have to give every week 100% under a lot of pressure about the audience. And not as in Korea, positive audience, what also applaud when you lose 4-0 in de K-league but worked hard of played nice, but audience that is swearing, hunting you down, throwing rotten fruit at you, media that kill you because of a wrong pass and is not satisfied for a win only but also wants good football.

There the players will grow so they must go there. Cha can like his father be a sensation in Europe but he must go now and not over a few years. Than he miss a few years of education and that can be the difference between a topplayer in Korea or a worldclassplayer. When they are playing all over the world, they become better, they can learn from each others experiences and they will get more hunger for the national team because it’s nice to go home once a month to show yourself to your own people for whom you don’t like to play like a donkey but prefer to look like a racehorse. In that case Korea kan grow to a strikingforce in worldfootball and than the second round in four years time will be no suprise but a reserved place already because the Koreans have everything (physically en mentally) to stay on top.

Expect coaches perhaps. That’s why Hiddink is here and why he does so well. So for coaches it must be the same. Look abroad, go abroad, follow courses in European countries or South America, go and look and broader your vision further than Asia. It’s also nescessary to keep up with your players. It can be that you need a foreigner for one more period, but the more the national team grow, the more it will be identify with Koreans and the more they are wanted else in the world. And important is to stand open for a strong competition in the squads on only quality and not the number of caps or age.

At the end I think in twelve years time we will see that players like Hong, Yoo and Hwang can be the coach of the Korean national team and be well respected all over the world. They can read the game already as players and they now know what is nescessary to book succes as a coach with Hiddink as a good example, even if they didn’t always agree because of the old Korean relations that Hiddink throw overboard. But his and their succes these weeks proven Hiddink is right in comparising with the old Korean coaches. Only they must openminded to go abroad, still as a player and later as a coach.

So Hiddink is not only educate footballplayers these days, he is already produce the coaches of the future for Korea. In 2014 Korea will play the World Cup somewhere in South America with Hong as headcoach and Park en Cha as the worldfamous stars with a bunch of young Korean talented players, all under contract with the big European clubs. Speak each other in twelve years and if this above is the outcome Guus Hiddink and the place in the quarterfinals was used in the only right way by the KFA.

Valentijn Driessen, 39 years old, footballwriter of de dutch based De Telegraaf, with more than 800.000 copies one of the biggest newspapers of Europe, I cover all the games in Korea but escpecially the team of Korea and their headcoach Guus Hiddink. We have two reporters in Japan.

This is my fourth World Cup and the three previous ones I followed the Dutch team in Italy, USA and France. In between I followed the European Championsship in Sweden, Engeland and Holland/Belgium two years ago. Further I was with a lot of European Cup finals and besides the 1999 Champions League final I was with all of them since 1995.

I know Guus Hiddink from 1988 when he was coach with PSV playing the Super Cup against Belgium side KV Mechelen.
